In addition to a successful singing career, Steve was a dedicated actor who was featured in numerous television shows like the Carol Burnett Show, the Judy Garland Show, and Danny Kaye Show. Moreover, he also starred in films like Murder, She Wrote, and Police Story, which contributed to his wealth.

Early Life

Lawrence was born on July 8, 1935, as Sidney Liebowitz in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. His mother was a homemaker while his father was a cantor at the Brooklyn synagogue.

Lawrence attended the Thomass Jefferson High School, where he would skip some time to spend time at the Brill Building in the hope of getting employed as a singer.

Career

Steve signed a contract with King Records in 1952 when he was 16 years old. This was after he had won a contest on Arthur Godfrey’s CBS TV show in the following years, Steve was hired by Steve Allen to be one of the singers on Allen’s local late-night show, WNBC-TV.

The show later became the Tonight Show and Lawrence alongside his partners Andy Williams and Eydie Gorme, stayed on the program until it came to an end in 1957.

When talking about his career, Steve revealed that the experience and exposure from the Tonight Show shaped his career. He went on to add that Steve Allen was the greatest thing that happened to him.

Steve was also drafted into the US Army and served as the official vocal soloist with the US Army Band Pershings Own in Washington DC.

He released hit parades in the late 50s and early 60s, with Go Away Little Girl which topped at number 9 on the US charts being awarded a gold record after it sold over a million copies.

The Tonight Show’s exposure also enabled Steve to land numerous acting roles. He appeared in several television shows and films.

Personal Life and Death

Steve was married to his wife Gorme on December 29, 1957. They had two sons David born in 1960 and Michael born in 1962. Michael died suddenly in 1986 at the age of 23. Larence died on March 7, 2024, at the age of 88.
