Bosworth started his career as a star at the University of Oklahoma where he joined and played for the school’s football team after graduation he was qualified for the NFL supplemental draft.

Bosworth’s views on NCAA control over athletes, he accused them of preventing athletes from making money from college matches, and his radical hairstyles made him popular. He won two Butkus awards which are for college linebackers. He took off his jersey during one of the games and revealed a t-shirt that read ‘ NCAA; National Communists Against Athletes’. This led to OU Coach Barry Switzer dismissing him from the team, though he later retracted the statement and then later denied retracting. He was suspended from the post-season 1987 Orange Bowl because he was suspected of being on steroids. The suspension made him lose leverage to pick where he would play.

Bosworth joined the Seattle Seahawks during the first round in the supplemental draft even though he had sworn to not work with the Seattle team. He signed the biggest rookie contract, a 10-year deal in 1986. He appeared in 12 games in the rookie season, and his appearance and outspoken personality were more outstanding than his game performance.

He was then selected by Tacoma starts of the Major Indoor Soccer League in the 12th round.

In his 1988 autobiography, he talked about drug use, gunplay in the athletic dorms, and other irregularities in the athlete’s world something that was proven later to be true and forced Switzer to resign.

After only two seasons, Bosworth suffered a shoulder injury in the 1988 season and had to retire early, he filed a $7 million lawsuit against Lloyds of London who claimed his injury was from arthritis.

In 2004, he was picked as the third worst flop on the Biggest Flops of the Last 25 Years list by ESPN.

Bosworth was announced as an inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame class of 2015.
