John’s parents are Tax Ritter and Dorothy Fay. His father was a singing cowboy and a matinee star while his mother was an actress. Regarding his educational background, John attended Hollywood High School and later joined the University of Southern California where he majored in psychology. However, he then changed his major to theatre arts and transferred to the USC School of Dramatic Arts.

During his time in college, Ritter travelled to different locations to perform on sage. He travelled to Netherlands, U.K. and West Germany. He then graduated in 1970.
