Who is Johnny Mathis?
John Royce Mathis was born in Gilmer, Texas, on September 30, 1935. Mathis is the fourth born in a family of seven children. He is the son of Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd. Mathis and his family moved to San Francisco and he grew up in the Richmond District.
His father noticed that Mathis was talented in music and he bought him an old upright piano. He then encouraged him to start playing it and practice music. Mathis then started learning songs and other routines taught to him by his father. He then later on started dancing and singing for visitors at home and even n church functions.
Johnny Mathis then started working with a voice coach at the age of 13. Coach Connie Cox helped him work on his voice and gave him the foundation that he needed for his future career. Mathis remained under the coach for six years. During this period, he learned vocal scales, voice production, and exercises.
Talking about his educational background, Mathis attended George Washington High School and later enrolled at San Francisco State College under an athletic scholarship.

He then recorded “It’s Not for Me to Say” and “Wonderful! Wonderful!” The songs did well and brought him popularity.
