Early Life and Career Beginnings

KRS One whose real name is Lawrence Parker was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Parker’s mother is American while his father is from Trinidad. When he was a teenager, he left home to become an MC.

He ended up being homeless and living in a homeless shelter in the South Bronx. Parker began involving himself in the street art graffiti scene, where he got the nickname KRS One. While still living in the homeless shelter, he met and began a relationship with youth counselor Scott Sterling. Sterling would go on to become an important asset with whom he began the hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions.

Rapping Under Boogie Down Productions

Boogie Down was formed in 1986 by Parker who went by the name KRS One, DJ Scott La Rock, and Derrick Jones. The group released its first album in 1987 a period during which it lost one of the group members Scott La Rock who was shot during an argument.

In 1988 the group released its second album, By All Means Necessary. The group became political in its content and it released other albums including Ghetto Music, Edutainment, and Love Hardcore Worldwide. Its final album came out in 1992.

The group became recognized for its Jamaican style in hip hop music which shaped the hip hop music. The group became influential in talking about the harsh reality in the South Bronx, which paved the way for the gangster rap movement.

In the late 80s, KRS One partnered with other big names to form the hip-hop group Stop the Violence Movement. The group released a single Self Destruction and its proceeds were all donated to the National Urban League.

Apart from singing in the music group Boogie Down Productions, KRS One embarked on a solo career immediately after the hip-hop group disbanded. He has continued to release more singles and albums, some of which have performed very well.
