Early Life
Pena was born in Chicago, Illinois to Nicolasa, a social worker, and Eleuterio, a factory worker. Pena’s parents were originally from Mexico, where they were farmers before they migrated to the United States of America.
Pena grew up in the North Lawndale area, where he attended Marista High School. He graduated from Hubbard High School, where he was part of the wrestling and track teams.
Career
Pena began acting in 1996 but he did not rise to fame immediately. His career breakthrough came in 2004 after he featured in Million Dollar Baby and Crash in the same year. Both films performed very well, but he caught more attention after his emotional performance in The Crash.
In 2005, Pena starred in The Shield, a Golden Globe-winning series. He went on to have other roles in Babel, Walkout, and Shooter, as agent Nick Memphis. The actor has also starred in the 2018 film, A Winkle in Time, where he played the main antagonist. He was also featured in Fantasy Island.
Apart from film acting, Pena announced in 2017 that he had joined the television cast for Narcos, in its fourth season. The fourth series began as a new series Narcos: Mexico and Pena acted as Kiki Camarena, a DEA agent.
Pena has also done voice acting. The actor voiced the character Ricky in the FX animated comedy Chosen. He also voiced the character of Tito in Turbo, further establishing his voice-acting career. Pena also voiced the character of Marguerite in American Dad.
Away from acting, Pena formed a music band in 2005, naming it after his mother Nico Vega. He left in 2007 to focus on acting but helped co-write the track Beast. The track reached number 26 on the Billboard Chart. He returned to the band in December 2023.
