Neil started referring to himself as Neil because there were so many students who were called Nigel. After high school, Neil joined the University of Canterbury. At the University, Neil considered doing law, but he failed all four units in the first year.
As a result, he started acting in the Canterbury University Drama Society. He acted in a production by Mervyn Thomspon and later replaced another actor who dropped out of a Wellington Season.
